Nutrition of the Romany population
HOMOLKOVÁ, Magdaléna
This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the nutrition of the Romany population. The thesis itself is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. Theoretical part is focused on differentiation of the Romany population and its individual groups, as well as on the eating habits of this minority, including the historically rooted habits and traditional dishes. The last section of the theoretical part describes the health status of the Romany population, especially the issue of overweight and obesity, which is often associated with this ethnic group. The aim of the practical part was to map the eating habits of a selected sample of the Romany population and to evaluate their influence on the health status of the respondents. In the thesis, I used the method of qualitative research - a structured interview and a diet record. I led the interview with ten randomly selected respondents, who subsequently received information of the recommended daily intake of energy, and I also explained to them the method of recording the weekly meal plan. The recorded meal plans were eventually evaluated by the programme called 'Nutriservis Profesional' and the actual energy intake per day was compared to the recommended energy intake per day. I also evaluated the overall layout of macronutrients and in the end, I compared the meal plan with general recommendations for rational diet. These recommendations are published in the Reference Values for Nutrient Intake, 2011. The issue of nutrition of the Romany population should be viewed in a comprehensive way and taking into consideration all possible factors influencing the way of eating of this minority, we should especially consider the socio-economic factors. The early education and the intervention of a nutrition specialist is crucial in this kind of issue.

The Roma minority by view of Vimperk's majority
MISTROVÁ, Jaroslava
Romanies are the most numerous ethnic minority in the Czech Republic. The Romany minority is very often connected with the problem of social exclusion. Excluded Romanies have got a lower level of education, high unemployment, high criminality, a worse state of health, a shorter average length of life, a low level of eating and housing. The majority socially dissociates themselvesfrom them. The bachelor´s thesis titled The Romany Minority in Vimperk from the Point of View of the Majority is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with social exclusion, describes Romanies, sub-ethnic groups of Romanies and their origin. It also describes the current situation of Romanies in the Czech Republic and in the town of Vimperk based on the data obtained from the Czech statistical office. The next chapters address selected social problems of Romanies and the related problem of discrimination. They namely focus on the topic of housing, unemployment, and education. Discrimination can usually be understood as differentiation or as a different approach to groups of people of certain age, gender, racial or ethnic origin; to people adhering to a specific culture and religion, or to groups which have got a specific disadvantage, alternatively a marginal social position; and who differ in this characteristic from other people. The last chapter deals with selected socially pathological phenomena concerning the Romany minority, such as criminality, gambling, drugs, and prostitution. The goal of this thesis is to chart the view of the majority inhabitants on the Romany minority in the town of Vimperk using the concept of social distance. Furthermore, its aim is to find out the cause of the negative view using quantitative research. The quantitative research was conducted through the method of questioning - the technique of standardized questionnaire. Two research questions have been determined for the purpose of thethesis: VO 1: What is the social distance of the majority against the Romany minority in Vimperk? VO 2: What are the sources of the negative view of the majority on the Romany minority in Vimperk? Following hypotheses were set based on the research questions: H1a: The social distance towards the Romany minority is growing with age. H1b: The social distance towards the Romany minority is higher in case of men than women. H1c: The social distance to the Romany minority is decreasing with higher education of the majority. H1d: The people who experienced a direct conflict with the Romanies evince higher rate of social distance compared to the people who have not experiences any direct conflict. The whole aggregate includes 133 majority inhabitants who live in the town of Vimperk from the age of 18 over 65 years of age. The obtained data have been processed through descriptive statistics in the programme Excel and set hypotheses have been evaluated statistically in the programme SPSS. The results have shown that the social distance of the majority inhabitants against the Romany minority in the town of Vimperk is not significantly influenced by gender, age, or education. The majority society dissociate themselves the most from the Romany minority in the relation of near kinship through marriage and a near friend, according to Bogardus´s scale of social distance. The Bogardus´s social distance scale is most often used to measure racism and other ethnic prejudice. It is a scale which consists of statements that are supposed to show what social distances feel the respondents among themselves and other groups. Among the most common problems connected to the Romany minority in the town of Vimperk is the disturbance of the peace at night, criminality, prostitution, drugs, and gambling. Other problems which appear in connection to the Romanies is unemployment, venereal diseases, maladjusted behaviour in the society, and polluting the town.

The image of ethnic and national minorities in Czech mass media
MINAŘÍK, Michal
The work deals with an image of ethnic and national minorities in Czech mass media. The theoretical part defines the basic theoretical terms and briefly characterizes selected minorities in our country. It also attends to the issues of coexistence, problems of stereotypes, attitudes and prejudices. The end of this part is addressing the issues of media, media product and medial representation of minorities in the selected theme context. The practical part is based on the assumption of current media presenting the minorities mostly in a connection with negative content, for example criminality, unemployment etc. The research part is aimed at the content analysis of daily newspaper articles, that relate to chosen minorities.
Support for Romany Secondary School Students
BŘEČKOVÁ, Gabriela
The theoretical part of this thesis is dealing with the differences in education in Romany families as compared to majority families, the education of the Romany minority, educational opportunities of Romany students and inequalities in the transition to high schools as compared with the majority population. Additionally, it describes the reasons for early drop out of Romany students from secondary schools and the concept of the Support is defined, as well as its changes that had taken place over the years till June 2011. The objective of this thesis is to identify the effectiveness of the Support of socially disadvantaged Romany secondary school students and college students. To obtain the necessary data, the method of qualitative research was chosen, the technique of semi-structured interview supplemented by secondary data analysis. The research group consisted of eight representatives of secondary schools in the South Bohemian Region County who asked for the Support in the past. The research results show that all Romany students apply for the Support at the outset of their studies, most of them repeatedly and separately for each period. If a Romany student meets the conditions for granting the Support, he/she must meet the conditions for the payment of the Support. The subsidy granted is paid retroactively in December, for the period from September to December, and in June, for the period from January to June. The unused finance is returned to the Ministry of Education. At the same time, the research suggests that completing the application form for the Support is not easy. The number of Romany students who applied for the Support from January 2005 to June 2011 shows a downward trend. The reasons for not using the Support included, in more than half of Romany children, an incorrect estimate of education costs and also a failure to submit the relevant documents for the retroactive payments; in 21 % of the cases the Support was not used due to drop out of the student, and the rest was due to unexcused absence. It is expected that this thesis could serve as an information source for the general public because the Support, also called positive discrimination, is a powerful motivational tool for socially disadvantaged Romany students for whom it is not easy to continue with their secondary education. At the same time, this thesis could become a source of research for other regions too.
Social pathology from the perspective of socially excluded Roma
JUREČKOVÁ, Monika
The submitted diploma thesis has been focused on the chosen socio-pathological phenomena in terms of socially excluded Roma adolescents. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part there I clarify first of all concepts as a social standard, a deviation and its basic theories, a culture of the poverty, I also deal with a delinquent and criminal behaviour in a context of the ethnicity, further I describe a social pathology in the Roma minority, a social exclusion of the Roma ethnic group including issues of social-excluded localities and in the end of the theoretical part I deal with an explanation of the concept Romany or the Roman ethnic group. An aim of the diploma thesis is to identify how Roma adolescent men and women living in social excluded localities perceive the social pathology. Because of the objectives and particularity of the research sample as well as the research investigation, I chose a qualitative research, a method of an interview and a technique of a half-standardized dialogue with open questions. The target sample includes 14 respondents aged 13 to 20 years. I addressed respondents in two socially excluded localities as follows: ? a dormitory of defaulters ? a dormitory of the housing estate type The result of the thesis is a recognition which phenomena are perceived by the social excluded Roma adolescents as pathological ones and which are their standard and whether they represent a factual standard for them or in what extent they have a personal experience with them.
